Volunteering with Grain Valley Schools

In order to keep our student’s safe, volunteers must be screened. Grain Valley Schools will use Datasource Background Screening Services to complete all background checks. Processing can take 48 hours or up to 2 weeks; for this reason, we encourage you to complete this process early in the year or before school starts.

THIS IS A 2-STEP PROCESS, PLEASE READ.

Please follow the steps below to become a volunteer, attend field trips, and more:

1. Click the link to complete the online Datasource Volunteer Background Application and pay the processing fee of $12.95* by card. Link to the Datasource Volunteer Background Application

2. Once you have completed the application, the following may occur:

  • You may receive an automatic Approval Letter within 48 to 72 hours. At that time, you will be given further instruction on how to proceed to be entered onto the volunteer lists of your student’s school. This second step will also include the required Volunteer Training.

  • You may not get results as quickly as 72 hours; this could be due to living in multiple states recently or you have something on your background check. This does not mean you will not be approved but it may take longer to get the approval completed.

  • You may receive a Denial Letter with further information and who to contact if you have questions.

  • If you have been approved and followed instructions but your school has changed or you need to inquire for any other reason please contact your student's school building first or you may be referred to Melina Denham Hoard at [email protected]

*Additional fees may apply. Background services requested may require additional surcharges for accessing county specific or other state-level records. This will be collected from the volunteer separately if needed by the Grain Valley School District.

Lunch Buddy Program

The Lunch Buddy Program is an excellent opportunity for adults from all walks of life to make a difference in the life of a child. The Lunch Buddy Program works to match positive, consistent adult mentors to elementary aged youth in Grain Valley Schools to improve student peer relationships and strengthen positive connections to school.

A Lunch Buddy is someone to eat with, someone to talk to, someone to listen to, and someone a child can depend on to be there for them. A Lunch Buddy volunteer will meet with the child during the student's lunch hour once every two weeks to help a child gain better relationships with their peers and feel better about their school community.

How can you help?
If you are interested in becoming a Lunch Buddy mentor at one of our elementary schools, please contact us at [email protected].

Current Employee
If you are a current employee or current substitute please email Melina at [email protected] for instructions to be added as a volunteer in GVSD. Current employees/substitutes do not need to file a background check with Datasource.
