New Teachers Take Flight in Grain Valley

For a new teacher, entering the classroom for the very first time often comes with many feelings of excitement and optimism, but there is also plenty of nerves, and apprehension. At Grain Valley Schools, it is important that all teachers feel equipped and empowered to do their best every day in the classroom. Each year, first and second year teachers take part in FLIGHT. A program that provides additional space for learning, collaboration, and reflection. Through this program, new teachers are provided specialized instruction with district administration, a space to ask questions, and they are assigned a veteran teacher who serves as their mentor. FLIGHT serves as an additional line of support as these individuals begin their journey in education.

At Grain Valley Schools, we believe that professional development should provide purpose, challenge and invoke thinking, and create life long learners. Through the Lead Learners district initiative, professional development across the district has a larger impact, and is designed for our educators, by our educators. Each year, Grain Valley Schools offers an opportunity for certified staff to apply to become a Lead Learner. Through this program, Lead Learners gain leadership skills, and prepare and provide meaningful professional development to their peers. In line with the district's strategic goals, professional development is made more purposeful with 24 Valley Learning Collectives. The Valley Learning Collectives are specialized groups staff are placed in based on their area of teaching, to ensure they are able to gain the most out of their time.
