Special Services

The Department of Special Services ensures a free and appropriate public education in the least restrictive environment for students eligible for special education (ages 3 – 21) or Section 504.

We follow state and federal eligibility regulations. Students who are eligible for special education qualify in one of thirteen eligibility categories. Once eligible, an individual plan is developed by the IEP team where priority goals are a focus for the student which will help them progress in their targeted areas.

If a student is eligible for a Section 504 Free Appropriate Public Education Plan, the focus is to provide appropriate modifications and/or accommodations in the general education setting. This plan is based on a documented medical concern for a given student.

If you have concerns regarding your child and suspect there may be a disability, please contact a special education coordinator or your child's principal.

  • Adult continuing education for persons with developmental disabilities offers adults the opportunity to attend non-credit classes in an educational and social environment. The ACED program is designed to teach independent living skills and provide life-enhancing experiences. Classes are held at UMKC, Graceland University, and Avila. The fee is $6.00 per class, $12.00 for two classes and $18.00 for 3 three classes. Fees include 6 weeks of classes.

  • The Missouri Interagency Transition Team (MITT) is a collaborative initiative established by the Department of Elementary & Secondary Education to enhance the transition from school to adulthood for students with disabilities. By bringing together a diverse group of state agencies, the MITT works to improve statewide outcomes in employment, education, and independent living. Their platform offers a comprehensive directory of resources—ranging from health and advocacy to post-secondary assistance—designed to support individuals at every stage of their journey toward independence.

We don't see a disability; we see a different ability.
