  • Nutrition and Fitness

The winning recipe for a healthy lifestyle includes a combination of both good nutrition and physical activity. Your body needs a variety of nutrient rich foods to grow and prevent illness. Your body also needs to move and exercise every day!

Key things you need to know about living a healthy lifestyle are:

    • Eat a healthy diet that includes fruits, vegetables, and whole grain products.
    • Control portion sizes.
    • Get active for at least 60 minutes, five times a week for ages 6-18.
    • Avoid tobacco and illegal drugs all together.

Well-nourished students have higher test scores, increased school attendance, improved concentration, and improved classroom behavior. Students who are physically fit sleep better and are more equipped to handle the physical and emotional challenges that they encounter during the day.

  • Meal Modifications for Allergies, Intolerance and Disability

    Grain Valley Schools:

    • Will, at all times, make meal modifications prescribed by a licensed physician to accommodate a disability.
    • Will, at its discretion, make meal modifications prescribed by a licensed physician due to a food allergy/intolerance or other medical condition that does not rise to the level of a disability. Please contact Food Services to discuss modification possibilities.

Grain Valley School District Food Service must receive the medical statement before the school can modify a student's meals. Parents should follow the medical statement instructions carefully for each meal category. Each section must be entirely completed
and signed by a physician before modifications can be started. Parents with questions should contact Andy Hughes or 816-994-4812. Otherwise please email the completed medical statement to Andy Hughes or mail it to:

    Nut Allergy Policy

Due to the large number of severe nut allergies in our district, Grain Valley produces school meals as nut free as possible. Nut products are avoided in any produced item in our kitchens. There are nut products in the building for use in the catering department. These items are prepared on separate tables from where school items are produced. Grain Valley Schools checks all ingredient labels of purchased items for the elementary meals to ensure, to the best of our ability, they do not contain nut ingredients or processed in a plant that manufactures peanut products. However, there are prepackaged products that contain nuts in the secondary snack/a la carte lines as well as
    Uncrustable sandwiches served for breakfast.

  • Elementary and secondary students will be allowed to charge the equivalent of three days meals (breakfast and lunch).

Any student (K – 12) whose account is at the charge limit and does not bring a lunch from home will be offered a National School Lunch Program meal of a sunbutter and jelly sandwich with a vegetable, fruit and non-fat milk.

A la carte items (snacks) cannot be charged if a student has a zero or negative balance. A la carte snacks and drinks are not part of the National School Lunch Program.

Negative balances may be avoided by using one of the following methods for depositing funds into the student’s account. Funds can be deposited on-line through the MySchoolBucks.com website. A link to the website can be found on the home-page of the district website. A deposit can also be made into the student’s account by sending a check (made payable to “Grain Valley School District”) or cash to school
with the student. When a student’s account is at a negative status, his/her guardian will be notified via email from the district. Paper letters may also be sent home. Any monies deposited into a negative balance account must first be used to satisfy the negative balance.

Free or reduced-price meal applications may be submitted at any time during the school year. A link to the on-line application may be found on the district website within the Food Service page. A paper application is available upon request.
