The Grain Valley High School (GVHS) softball team continues to strike out the competition as they officially move on to the State Tournament. This marks just the second time in school history that the softball team has advanced to state — the first being in 2012, when the team brought home second place.
Thirteen years later, GVHS is back in action after big wins over North Kansas City, Blue Springs, and Blue Springs South secured them a first-place finish in the Class 5, District 7 Tournament.
After winning districts, the Eagles set their sights on the quarterfinals — the last stop before officially entering the state tournament. There, they faced a very strong Liberty North squad. The game was tight, but the GVHS Eagles pulled out a 2-1 win.
The victory wouldn’t have been possible without Molly Jones. The junior pitcher had yet another standout performance, shutting down the Liberty North bats with three-up, three-down eighth and ninth innings. Jones pitched the entire game, allowing just five hits and recording five strikeouts.
The Eagles now shift their focus to their next opponent, Rock Bridge High School. The Bruins are currently 25-10 on the season, while the Eagles sit at 30-6. An earlier matchup between the two teams was a close one, with the Eagles coming out on top in an 8-7 win.
The matchup will be held on October 30, with the first pitch at 12:00 p.m. The Eagles and Bruins will travel to Springfield, Missouri, to compete at Meador Park. Good luck to the Eagles!
