Third Grade students at Matthews Elementary took on a unique challenge when they decided to become the museum exhibits. After learning about Famous Missourians, a Wax Museum was brought to life in the cafeteria of the school.
Teachers, students and families tested these students' knowledge when they visited the museum and found students dressed up as famous Missourians. “When someone comes up, they press your button, and then you start reading about them, and you become the person that you are” said Beckham, who dressed up as Nascar Racer Rusty Wallace who was born in Arnold, Missouri.
After pressing a button on a student's hand, the famous Missourian came to life and read about their life, and why they are famous. Students researched their famous Missourian and wrote a biography about that individual. They used these notes to help tell the story of their famous Missourian's life. “We learned about famous Missourians back in the days when they existed.” said Oliver, a student at Matthews. “I have dressed up as Walt Disney, and I am famous for creating Disney.” Oliver continued, “My favorite part is that I get to show my knowledge when they press my button.”

The unique experience offered students an opportunity to explore learning history in a new and exciting way while also empowering them to showcase what they have learned to their peers, teachers, and families.
