Students learning how to exit school bus safelyOctober 20–24 is National School Bus Safety Week. Nearly 25–26 million students ride a school bus each year, and while not every student relies on a school bus to get to and from school each day, many may still rely on this form of transportation for other purposes, such as field trips, sporting events, and academic activities.

Because so many students will ride a school bus at some point throughout the year, it is vital that they understand how to do so safely. The Grain Valley Schools Transportation team spent the last couple of weeks visiting elementary schools and helping students become safe and confident passengers. Each elementary school participated in school bus safety drills that taught them what to do in the event of a bus evacuation.

Before the drill, bus drivers explained to each student what the drill would look like and what was needed from them in order to complete a safe and effective evacuation. Student leaders supported their peers by standing at the emergency exit and reminding their classmates of the proper protocol as they exited the bus. The student leaders also helped ensure that each student was able to exit the bus safely by offering a helping hand where needed.
