When you think of the month of October, thoughts of the trees changing colors, crisp leaves falling, and cooler weather probably all cross your mind. For many, a weekend full of football is a fall time staple, for public school districts across America, Friday night lights are a time for the community to come together and celebrate their hometown.

Each year, high schools around the nation spend a week getting in the spirit for the annual homecoming game, but Homecoming in Grain Valley is about much more than the Friday night football game. Homecoming week brings past and present GV students together to laugh, connect, and reminisce on their days walking the halls of the schools.

Throughout the week, celebrations took place in the schools, and out in the community. District-wide, students took part in spirit week where the Grain Valley infamous Tractor Tuesday lived on, and high School cheerleaders and football players stopped by Prairie Branch Elementary to greet students during morning drop off.

The community rallied behind the student athletes and brought the Grain Valley spirit to life with a Pep Rally Bonfire, and high school students kept the momentum going with their own pep rally at school on Friday before the game that evening.

Students and staff played games, danced, and competed for the GVHS Spirit Stick. Student athletes and activities participants along with the Homecoming Royalty court were recognized throughout.

GVHS rolled to a big win over Belton High School with a final score of 57-22. The stands were packed, and alumni had the chance to catch up with one another at the annual Alumni tent. During half time, the Grain Valley Marching Band performed their competition routine titled “Groove”, a 70’s inspired show that has helped secure several top place finishes in competitions around the midwest.

The Homecoming Royalty was also recognized during halftime. Here, the Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior Prince and Princess were honored. The Senior Homecoming Royalty Court was recognized before the King and Queen were named. Congratulations to our Homecoming King and Queen, Lucas Jurgensmeyer and Courtney Hicks.

It was a great week in a great community.
