Unplugged & Engaged: Creating Focused Learning Environments at Grain Valley Schools

As we prepare for the 2025-2026 school year, we're implementing a district-wide shift in how personal electronic communication devices are used during the school day. In alignment with Senate Bill 68 and supported by current research, Grain Valley Schools is launching Unplugged & Engaged - a proactive approach to minimize distractions and help students stay present in their learning and interactions.

This effort aims to create the best possible academic and social environment for every student - one that prioritizes focus, connection, and well-being.

Why Unplugged & Engaged?
Research - including findings from The Anxious Generation by Jonathan Haidt - shows that reducing screen time during the school day can lead to better focus, improved academic performance, and healthier social-emotional development. By stepping away from devices during the day, our students are better positioned to thrive.

What This Means for Students
Beginning with the 2025-2026 school year, students in PreK-12th grade are expected to refrain from using or displaying personal communication devices during school hours - from the first bell to the last.

Devices include:
- Cell Phones
- Smart Watches
- Wireless earbuds/headphones
- Gaming devices and similar electronics

These devices should be turned off and stored securely during the school day unless permitted by a teacher or administrator.

Communication During the Day
If your student needs to contact home during the day, they should notify a teacher or visit the front office to use a district-provided phone. This helps keep classrooms distraction-free and ensures student communication is purposeful and respectful of the learning environment.

Exceptions
We understand there are some instances where devices may be necessary. Exceptions include:
- A documented need in a student's IEP (Individualized Education Plan), 504 Plan, or Health Plan.
- Administrator-approved use for educational purposes.
- Emergency situations

School-Specific Expectations
Each level has specific guidelines that reflect student needs and building routines. For full details, please review the electronic device section in each student handbook. The student handbook links can be found on each buildings website under Information and Tools > Student Handbook.
